Based on The Saxon Stories series of historical novels by Bernard Cornwell about the birth of England in the ninth and tenth centuries, the first four seasons of the TV series were based on the first eight books – but prolific author Cornwell has written a further five novels, leaving plenty of material for The Last Kingdom team to mine for the upcoming fifth season and beyond.
